KINGSPORT, TN (NOVEMBER 30, 2017)--The flock of laying hens at Jurassic Flock Farm is now Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW). This certification andfood label lets consumers know these animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards in the U.S. and Canada, using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent farm. Like other Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW farmers across the country, Nathan and Jessica Gaude recognize the growing consumer interest in how animals are raised on farms. Managing animals outdoors on pasture or range has known benefits for animals, consumers and the environment. The Gaudes always wanted to start a small farm. After visiting their friends' farm in Virginia, they were inspired to start making conversions to their own property to raise laying hens outdoors on pasture, turning a half-acre fenced-in dog lot into a chicken yard--and converting an old children's playhouse into a chicken coop! Jurassic Flock Farm is now home to a variety of laying hen breeds, including Wyandottes, Cochins, Easter Eggers, Brahmas, Cream Legbars, Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps and several varieties of Marans. The Gaudes chose breeds that were well suited to the mild winters and warm summers of northeast Tennessee, as well as for the multi-colored eggs they produce. Nathan Gaude of Jurassic Flock Farm says,
"We originally wanted to go for an organic certification, but quickly realized we would never be able to afford it. Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW is an even better certification for us, because it takes the animals' welfare into consideration and that was our goal all along. We were very excited to join forces with A Greener World and showcase the hard work we put into our little farm."
